Mobile Healthcare Is on the Run

Posted by Anne Pratt at 1:12 pm, December 6, 2010

Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Hopefully on a smartphone screen. 500 million people will be using mobile health applications by 2015, according to the Global Mobile Health Market Report. If you’re a healthcare marketer or provider, it’s time to get on board.

Not only will consumers turn to their phones for healthcare information, more physicians will be using their iPhones and iPads as well. 43% of mobile health apps being designed right now are for healthcare professionals and providers.

The ability to access medical information in an instant, from anywhere, can greatly increase quality of care. Physicians can carry medical information and records in their pockets. Patients can get lab results, schedule appointments and renew prescriptions with the touch of a button. It’s all about making healthcare easier, more efficient and more instant.

Major tech players are helping the healthcare industry make the mobile leap. Led by Bill Gates, the Gates Foundation is currently funding worldwide research in healthcare application development. Primarily focused on children’s health, Gates hopes to see smartphones being used to remind mothers of prenatal care, vaccinations and other important milestones in the health of their children.

HC&B’s advice? Start developing your mobile apps now, if you haven’t already. In healthcare, and in technology, every minute counts.
